Auction-style
Offer an item at a starting price, but let buyers determine its final price using bids.
When to use it:
Auctions work for most items, especially high-demand, hard-to-find or unique ones. The excitement of bidding creates buzz, often pushing prices higher than those of fixed price listings.

Buy It Now
Offer an item at a fixed price. Shoppers can buy immediately.
When to use it:
Buy It Now is good for items with a known market value like new DVDs or CDs. |
Auction with Buy It Now
The convenience of Buy It Now in an Auction listing. The listing ends when someone clicks the Buy It Now button. If someone bids first, the Buy It Now button disappears.
When to use it:
Great for high-demand, hard-to-find, unique items. Buyers not willing to wait or risk losing to a higher bidder can make an immediate purchase. |

Updates to Auction-style with Buy It Now listings
Auctions with a great start price draw millions of buyers to eBay. To protect that important distinction for the eBay marketplace, we're establishing some new guidelines for Auction-style listings with Buy It Now. For all Auction-style items listed on or after October 1, 2008, the Buy It Now price will have to be at least 10% more than the auction start price.
TAKE ACTION:
- Use Auction-style listings the way they work bestwith a low start price to stimulate bidding.
- Consider moving some of your Auction-style with Buy It Now inventory to the Fixed Price format. You can also use Best Offer with Fixed Price.
