Writing a Guide

Write a guide and share your knowledge or opinions about almost any topic with the entire eBay community. To write a guide, visit Guides, and click the "Write a guide!" link.Create a guide title.

  1. Create a title for your guide. eBay users will see this title in the Guides search results. Provide as much information as you can about the content of your guide in your title.

  2. Write the guide text.
    Write the main text of your guide. With the editing tool, you can change the appearance of the text, add bullet points, and more. Guides have a 20,000-character limit.

    Note: Your character count includes text, links, pictures, and HTML formatting tags.

  3. Add links to eBay searches and other eBay pages (optional).
    For example, if you have written about vintage toys, you can add a link to an eBay search for vintage toys. See below about how to add a link.

    • 3.1. Click "Link".

    • 3.2. In the eBay search box, enter the words used to run your eBay search. For example, "toy fire engine vintage."

    • 3.3. In the Name of Link field, enter the text that will represent the link in your guide. In this example, "Vintage Toy Fire \ Engines."

    • 3.4. Click the "Add Link" button to add the link to your guide.
      You can also enter URLs for eBay pages directly in the "eBay Web Page" field. Use this choice to link to complex eBay searches, Stores Pages, About Me Pages and more.

  4. Add pictures (optional).

    To upload pictures into your guide, click the browseinsert button. The picture will appear in the guide text box. button and the picture will appear in the guide text box.

  5. Enter tags.
    Tags are important words related to your guide and will help users find your guide when they search. Pick words that are important to your guide. For example, a guide about vintage toys might include the tags: "toys," "vintage toys," "fire engines," "miniatures," and "dolls."

Choose words that are important to your guide, such as a brand name, category name, material, time period, and so on. For example, a guide about vintage toy fire engines might include these tags: "toys," "vintage toys," "fire engines," "miniatures," and "metal." You can include up to five tags.

  6. Save your work.

    • Click the Save & Continue button.

    • If you have finished creating your guide and want to publish it, verify that the categories where your guide will be stored are correct, then click the Submit Guide button. Your guide will be saved in My eBay and will appear in search results within 24-48 hours.

    • If you do not want to publish your guide immediately, you can stop at this point and work on it later. To resume working on your guide, go to My eBay and click the Edit/Display link next to the draft guide you want to work on. Each version of your guide will be stored in My eBay.

Based on the title and tags of your guide, the system will recommend up to three categories where your guide will be saved. After you click the Save & Continue button, you will be able to unselect categories that do not seem appropriate for your guide.

  1. On the Write a Guide page in the formatting toolbar, click Link.

  2. If you want to add an eBay search, in the eBay search box enter the words used to run your search. For example, if you are writing about vintage toys, you can add a link to an eBay search for vintage toys, "toy fire engine vintage."

  3. If you want to add a link to an eBay page, enter the page’s URL in the eBay Web page field. Use this choice to link to complex eBay searches, eBay Stores, your About Me page, and other Community pages.

  4. In the Name of link field, enter the text that will represent the link in your guide. In this example, "Vintage Toy Fire Engines."

  5. Click the Add Link button to add the link to your guide. You can add as many links as you want.

Note: If you do not want to publish your guide immediately, you can always save your guide and work on it later.  To resume working on your guide, go to My eBay and click the Guides link in the Shortcuts menu. If you don't see the Guides link, click the Edit Shortcuts button and select the check box next to Guides, then click the Save button.
