Managing Bidders and Buyers (Block Buyers or Cancel Bids)

When you sell on eBay, you're working directly with the eBay community. eBay provides you with ways you can manage bidders and buyers so you can be sure you feel comfortable with people in your transactions. But make sure you review all of the information about these tools before using them.

For your listings, you can:

You can set up buyer requirements for your listings by going to the Seller Preferences section in My eBay. These requirements are based on characteristics, rather than specific User IDs. For example, you can block all buyers that have a negative feedback score.

Viewing bidder information

When you list an item, you can see detailed information on your bidders from the Bid History and Bid History: Details pages. To keep eBay a safe place for buyers and sellers, eBay limits how bid history information is shown.

Other members can't see member-specific information - such as User IDs - for bidders on an item.

Bidders and sellers are assigned anonymous names that are used consistently throughout an item’s bid history. User IDs will appear as anonymous names throughout the duration of the auction listing, even if you lower the price. Anonymous names may also appear more than once in the bid history and may represent different bidders from different auction listings. Only the seller can see a bidder’s User ID.

Blocking bidders and buyers

If you know that you don't want to sell to certain eBay members, you can put them on your blocked list. Members on that list will not be able to bid on any of your listings until you remove them from the list. You can block up to 5,000 User IDs.

To add a member to your blocked list:
  1. Go to the Blocking a bidder/buyer page.

  2. Enter the User IDs of the eBay members you wish to block in the text box.

  3. Click the Submit button.

To remove a buyer from your blocked list, delete the User ID(s) in the text box and click the Submit button.
Note: Remember to tell eBay members after you've lifted the block, so that they can resume bidding on your items.

Cancelling bids

In general, you should not cancel bids on your auctions.

Legitimate reasons for a seller to cancel a bid include:

  • A bidder contacts you to back out of the bid.

  • You cannot verify the identity of the bidder after trying all reasonable means of contact.

Important: Bids cannot be reinstated once they've been cancelled.

Note: You can also cancel bids when you end your listing early.

To cancel a bidder's bid:
  1. Enter the Item Number, the User ID of the bid you are cancelling, and the reason you are cancelling the bid.

  2. Click the Cancel Bid button.
