Item Condition "New"

Items described as "new" or "used" help buyers and sellers understand more about item listings.

Guideline for describing an item's condition as "new."
In general, an item can be listed as "new" if it's unused and fully functional, has no damages or signs of usage, and has only been in stock for a specific maximum time. The time in stock must not have a negative impact on the item's condition. Also, the item must not have become outdated because of more the availability of more recent models in its category (for example, categories like audio equipment, electronic devices, photo & camcorders, mobile phones, organizers, computers, as well as PC & video games).

Tip
The guideline is generally, but not always applicable, for determining an item's condition. As a seller, you should always be as specific as possible when describing your item, which will help your buyer judge when reading the item description.

To improve your listings you could:

  • Explain whether or not the item will be shipped in its original packaging and whether or not the packaging has ever been opened.
  • List all manuals, accessories, and additional documents that will be shipped with the item.
  • Note if the item has a valid warranty that can be passed on to the buyer.
  • Let the buyer know when the item has been exhibited in a store or show, or has been used to demonstrate a product.
  • Note when the item has a certain expiration date (for example, in the gourmet, or beauty & health categories).
  • Explain whether store tags are still attached (for example, in the clothing & accessories category).
  • List any certificates that will be provided with the item (for example, in watches or jewelry categories).

As a buyer, read the item description carefully to learn about all details on the item. If you have questions, please contact the seller and ask for additional details.
